Researchers associated with forensic science laboratories may have access to DNA profile data generated from casework, but there are ethical issues in using such data for the purposes of research and teaching.
To overcome such issues, Dr Maguire conceived a software application – DNA Profile Builder© – to generate DNA profiles from user defined STR chemistries and allele frequency data sets. This application will generate large numbers of DNA profiles to simulate a DNA database. In addition, the application allows the user to define and build family pedigrees including ‘incestuous’ family relationships.
DNA Profile Builder© has been used to create the DNA profiles to mimic the ante-mortem and post-mortem data for an air crash scenario containing 37 deceased individuals. This data can be used for teaching, demonstrations and validations purposes.
The development of the DNA Profile Builder was funded by the University of Northumbria HEIF Innovation Seed Fund (£7,392).
